This August, professionals in the fire protection industry — newcomers and veterans alike — arrived at the General Air Products National Fire Training Center to bone up on their inspection, testing, and maintenance training by way of a full day of hands-on work with equipment and instructive seminars.
The day kicked off with a session from the NFSA’s ITM Specialist Vince Powers, in which he focused on the inspection and testing of fire pumps, discussing the purpose of fire pumps as well as reviewing their inspection and testing frequencies. Afterward, President of AGF Manufacturing, Jim McHugh led participants in a discussion of air venting, NFPA 13 Code Requirements, and corrosion monitoring, among other topics.
After lunch, General Air Products Regional Sales Manager Kyle Curran had attendees get up close with General Air’s equipment, including our air compressors, dry air generators, and the Vapor Pipe Shield, as part of his session on ITM Training for Dry and Pre-Action Air Supplies. Then, participants were able to install ASC Engineered Solutions’ couplings and flexhead brackets as Sales Manager Steve Tajer gave everyone a look at some of the company’s latest product offerings, including the AFCON “Bear Trap” Seismic Sway Brace, and the Flexhead FH120 Rapid Installation Bracket.
The final speaker of the day was Vernon Bitzer Associates’ David Steele, who had everyone taking apart valves and learning some hands-on tricks for testing and repairing backflow preventers, in an effort to provide a fuller understanding of how a backflow works.
It was a jam-packed, intensive day — and one worth 6 NICET CPD credits! — but a productive one, too. Regardless of experience in the industry, all participants walked away with a better understanding of various fire sprinkler components. None of it would’ve been possible without our incredible and generous line-up of speakers, nor without a great group of attendees facilitating discussion.
